Every single day we (the coaches at CrossFit 673 Jerudong) are surrounded by athletes  performing incredible feats. Not only feats of physical strength, speed, and endurance, but also feats of selflessness, courage, and strength of will. These accomplishments deserve to be shared. Our athletes put in so much hard work and dedication every week, and we want to recognize the greatness within them on a larger stage. With that in mind, we feature athletes who display the heart and soul of CrossFit 673 Jerudong. They inspire us, we hope they inspire you. If you ask someone to imagine the ideal athlete you’ll always find certain characteristics people would want: someone who is hard working, competitive, gifted with natural abilities, and devoted to excellence. All of these apply to Bibi, and it showed in her recent performance at the annual Beast of the South East (BOSE) competition hosted at Pusat Belia earlier this year. Bibi finished 2nd overall in the women’s scaled division, beating out some tough competition from around the region for her first ever podium finish!

But there is more to CrossFit than succeeding as an individual athlete. At CrossFit 673 Jerudong we are looking for people who are also great teammates, and for our community Bibi sets the bar high. Ask anyone in the gym and they will remember a time Bibi spoke, gasped, or yelled an encouragement their way during a tough workout. In CrossFit we rarely workout by ourselves, but when you workout with Bibi you never workout alone.

When others within our community succeed, we all succeed, and this is a truth Bibi understands well. Even when she wins she’s doing it for others. It’s why she gives her all in class and on the competition floor, so we can celebrate and participate in her victories and also why everyday she pushes and encourages others to reach their full potential. This CrossFit thing we do, not to mention all of life, is about so much more than ourselves. We are thankful to have someone to remind us of that.

What first drew you to CrossFit?

I have always enjoyed outdoor sports such as hiking and swimming and at first responded to a colleague  saying “crossfit is definitely not for me”.  Filzah invited me to try out a session at 673 jerudong and since then I have seen improvements within myself. Improvements both mentally and physically 🙂 “If this box (aka gym) does not change you, you  may move to another gym” that was what I remembered during foundations which was more than a year ago. I definitely enjoy working out at Crossfit 673 Jerudong and it has no doubt helped me achieved a lot for my body. Also you can scaled the workouts to whichever level you like, which was important for me since I did not feel confident at first. You decide your limits. Have you tried crossfit? Give your body a chance to experience a life changing sport!

What CrossFit achievement are you most proud of?

Being able to participate at the BOSE 2015 scaled division and won second place has definitely proven that the workouts and practices at the box are worth it.

What motivates you to keep striving for improvement?

Participating in competitions definitely motivates everyone to improve.  Healthy competition helps me to strive for my target and achieve new PRs (personal records).  CrossFit programs monitor and encourage continuous improvement and participating in competitions further boosts my commitment and determination in training.  It adds a purpose to the tough workouts/movements.

What did you enjoy most about your experience at BOSE?

The support that the community showed before, during, and after the event was overwhelming.  The coaches and community continuously gave advise on technique and efficiencies.  You know that you are not alone and doing your very best will definitely be worth it.

When do you have the most fun at the gym?

Yelling and cheering for others is the most fun part at the gym! It’s the place I shout and release tension after a stressful day. I love making time for CrossFit! Honestly, the time I enjoyed most was during the Opens season. “The pain is real” I enjoy watching the struggle everyone shows but at the same time finishes every WOD feeling very satisfied.

How does being a part of a community enhance your CrossFit experience?

The community will never let me give up easily.  It is the ‘PUSH’ that you need to gain confidence in doing something you are not very comfortable with.

Describe your perfect CrossFit class experience (either one that actually happened or imaginary)

A perfect CrossFit class experience was definitely the mini team competition/demonstration we hosted for Edutainment at the Jerudong amphitheater.  I absolutely love partner and team workouts in class! Having a positive partner or team makes every single session more enjoyable.

At Jbox we ask two things of every athlete:

1. Enter the gym with a positive attitude
2. Treat others the way you want to be treated.

If you are looking for a prime example of someone who lives just that, look no further. Yus joined CF673 J before we even opened our doors for our free community WOD and has brought his leadership, selflessness, and determination to our community ever since. Individually, Yus scored in the top 10 at Jerudong for the 2015 CrossFit Open, but far more important to him was his team “Wednesday Addams” pulling off a comeback win in the Open Team Challenge at Jerudong. As teammate Nicole Payne says “Yus was a great captain because he put his teammates before himself in every workout. He wanted us to perform our very best of course, but his primary goal was for us to feel successful and know we contributed something important to the team.”

Yus has not only led his team team to victory, he’s leading the entire community by example. In CrossFit we are all tempted to stick to strengths and avoid weaknesses. It’s satisfying to know you are good at something and express that in the gym. However, it’s when we face challenges yet to be conquered we experience the best of what CrossFit has to offer. All December we watched for weeks as Yus set his sights on getting a muscle up. Day after day he came to the gym, hopped on the bar, and worked through the progressions Coach Dan had given him. Several times he tried, several times unsuccessful. But then, on December 30th…

Yus had conquered. But we never settle for one victory, CrossFit pushes us towards the next and the next and the next. So in the Opens Yus was determined to score Rx for 14.3 and get his first Ring Muscle Up. He tried hard, asked advice, tried again, and finally…didn’t get one.

But we know he will, and when he does we’ll cheer even louder because what we’ve seen from Yus has taught us a crucial lesson: that every hurdle we face is only YET to be conquered. The victory always remains within our reach, how soon we see it is up to us.

Why did you first decide to start CrossFit?
Hanizam Alidin told me about Michael Mogard so I googled him, looked pretty legit.

What CrossFit achievement are you most proud of?
First Muscle-Up, especially with the fact that I stuck to Dan Aderton’s program and kept doing the drills for more than three weeks was a personal achievement in itself.

What keeps you going during tough WODs?
At J-Box, a TOUGH WOD usually means GOOD FOOD afterwards.

When do you have the most fun at the gym?
Most of the time. Annie was one of the last benchmark WODs that I enjoyed and it was a four-way throwdown with Adam, KC and Shaz, and the new kids dominated us.

Metallica, but I’m not sure the box is ready for that so anything I know the lyrics to.

To help Crossfit 673 Jerudong grow.

Photography and something I love to do more of, traveling.

Filzah is among those who first joined CrossFit 673 Jerudong the month we opened our doors back in May 2014 and since day one Filzah has made the box a little brighter. Her cheery demeanor, WOD conquering will, and of course her egg tarts(!!!) ensure everyone has a little more fun when she’s around. Motivated by pushing herself to the limits, Filz isn’t one to back down from a challenge. In 2013 she competed against the world in her first CrossFit Opens and currently ranks 14th in the 673 League with a top 5 finish in event 5.14.

She also faces her weaknesses head on. When she first came to our gym she could only do one double under at a time, now people are asking her for tips! Each and every class she sets the pace by giving it her all, always with that signature smile (after the WOD at least). We asked Filzah to share about her CrossFit journey (so far), and give us a little more insight into what makes her tick.

Why did you start doing CrossFit?

Out of curiosity after I stumbled upon a Facebook page on CrossFit I went to check out what it is all about. That was 2 years ago, and here I am still learning & wodding with my fellow CrossFitters. CrossFit itself is a concept of fitness. It’s not for the faint hearted but with strong will, determination, perseverance & hard work, anyone can do CrossFit. Nowadays more & more Bruneians are aware of CrossFit but once I mention I’m a CrossFitter, it’s still a hard fact to process. Just because of the traditional lifestyle where girls don’t lift. But as long as I love what I do, it all doesn’t matter to me really.

How would you describe the 673 community?

The community at the box is a bonus. It’s so easy to be friends with everyone. Outgoing, boisterous, jokes all around, goofy..all after WODs.

What’s your favorite type of WOD (Workout of the Day)?

I don’t have any particular favourite WOD because all of the WODs are just tough. But safe to say, people at the box makes each & every WOD do-able. Gymnastics movements are my least favourite.

How was your experience doing CrossFit competitively?

Ever since I started CrossFit, I took part at Battle Royale 2012, CrossFit Games 2013 & Battle Royale 2014. To compete is tough. Not only am I trying to beat the time, there are also stronger competitors all around. Regardless of the beginners or those who have been doing CrossFit for over a year. But at the end of the day, of every competition, I could see my weakness & strength. And from there I will try my best to do what I must do harder.

What fitness goals do you have for the next year?

For 2015, I have set a few goals & few PRs which I would dream to achieve. Pull ups without band, snatch 85lbs, clean & jerk 110lbs are some of the many.

What hobbies do you have outside of CrossFit?

Apart from CrossFit, I’m a full time English teacher at a Secondary School, bakes & sells egg tart as part time & I do Humanitarian Aid Mission for Muslims to countries such as Cambodia & Vietnam during school breaks.
